Everyone gets older, including your pet. And just like humans, animals need help as they transition from adulthood to senior life.

But what can you change around your home and in your pet's life to give them the accommodations they need?

How To Make Life Easier For Your Senior Pet
As your pet ages, they won't be able to do everything they used to do. That said, here are four modifications you can make around your home that will make a major difference in your pet's quality of life:

  1. Install ramps and stairs. Both dogs and cats can have trouble getting on and off furniture as they age. Many times this is because of arthritis, but it can also be due to decreased vision. Help your pet out by installing stools, steps, and ramps where necessary.

  2. Give rugs and stairs extra traction. Senior cats and dogs lose traction in their foot pads as they age. This can cause them to slip on hardwood floors, stairs, and other surfaces. Be sure your home's rugs have rubber grip pads beneath them to make them safe for your pet. And place traction pads on the stairs in your home.

  3. Get food and water dishes that are easier to use. It isn't only your pets hips and paws that change as they age. They can also suffer from discomfort in their neck. This makes it difficult for senior pets to comfortably eat and drink. Luckily, you can find food dishes that are heightened or come on a small shelf to meet your pet's needs.

  4. Check your pet's vision and hearing. Older pets can suffer from decreased hearing and vision. This makes it trickier to navigate the house and yard. In fact, older animals are at higher risk for getting lost because they may not be able to see where they're going. Regular veterinary visits, including at-home visits, can help you detect vision and hearing problems early on.

Vets recommend twice-yearly checkups for senior pets. These visits help to catch illnesses and other medical conditions before they can become a problem.
